I am experiencing the same problem with Mercury International.
My mother, who visited me from India, had an insurance policy from National
Insurance. In the US, she broke her arm, and underwent surgery. Our medical
bill amounted to around 8000$ that we have already paid to the hospitals
and doctors. We filed a claim with Mercury International in July 2002,
and have not heard from them. National Insurance, in India, says that
there is nothing they can do about this. Prasenjit Sarkar... 25

I am really surprised at the number of people
complaining about Mercury International. I thought I was
the only person facing these issues but looks like there are a boat-load
of people in this situation. Probably I beat every one with the amount
bills that Mercury needs to pay. I have apprx $15,000 that need to be
paid and I am waiting on it since 23rd June, 2002. I hope Mercury settles
these claims soon, to avoid any class action law suit against them. Sandeep...

We are having similar problems.
I tried calling their UK Office and they just hang up on you. Any suggestions
on what we can do?

My In Laws had come from India and had taken
medical insurance from India (United India Insurance Company). which
provides coverage via Mercury International Inc., based in UK.
My Father in law had a surgery for hernia on 1st Feb 2002. We have a claim
of only $650.
We have been contacting Mercury International in UK and Florida for the
past 6-7 months. When you call their Florida office they ask you to contact
UK office. Today when we called the UK office, we were told that all the
claims from Indian Policies are frozen and they cant do any thing. I think
its time for class action law suit against them. Akshat Saxena..

I have a similar complaint to make.
My mother' accident bills totalled to $3700. My mother's policy
was issued on March 2002 and was active from April-Sept 2002. The Mercury
is trying to put the blame on the Indian Company. I have not heard any
reply from Indian Company (New India Assurance) so far.
If Mercury's claims that Indian Company did not pay is true, why are they
still accepting out claims? Why are they not writing anything back saying
what they say in phone? My feeling is whetever they are doing is unlawful.
My mother's original policy and claim bills are stuck with them now though
I have copies. My question is does anybody know of the direct email address
of new india assurance? Also is any of you planning any legal action?
Any reply in this regard is appreciated

Let us file a joint complaint letter.
I am facing the similar case against Mercury/New India Assurance and the
banks have sent collection agencies who harass me every week.
My father is in Bangalore and is willing to speak/discuss the matter with
the MD and Regional Managers of New India. I strongly believe our claims
will be satisfied if we document our claims properly and jointly complain
in an organized manner.
If you are interested then please send me email at rahul@cmu.edu.

The latest news from India is that the dispute between
mercury international and the insurance companies has been settled.
Mercury is supposed to be processing claims again. Is this happening
? Are any of you getting favorable responses from mercury in response
to reminders for payment ? Have any payments been processed ?My mothers
claim has been outstanding for the last 4 months. Sanjay....26

It is surrpising that it is just not me
but so many people. I have spent more than 100
dollars in mailing and calling up florida and londoan office for a 500
dollar claim and each time they are blaming each other.

I have faced a similar kind of problem with
Mercury International.
My mother bought an insurance from Mercury International through Natioanl
Insurance Ltd of India. She had to undergo a minor surgery in US of $449.00.
Mercury International told me to provide a doctor's certificate and $100.00
towards the deductible. I fulfilled all those requirements by Oct. 2,
2002.
Since that time I have not heard from them anything. In the mean time
I am getting regular calls from the Hospital to make the payment.
I think if all of us get together and file a legal complaint against both
the Indian and UK based companies, we may get a better resolution of our
problem.

We are having a problem with Mercury International
concerning the hospital side. We (a university hospital
in Germany) treated a patient in 2001(!). We never had any answers to
our bills or reminders. After one year I tried to get in personal contact
with Mercury through phone. I talked to four different persons, each time
I was promised an immediate answer, but there had never been any reaction
since september 2002. We lost 5.300 EUR, they will lose a lot more

a gangrenous gall bladder followed by another surgery for bleeding. the
total bills are in excess of 40,000 dollars. i have had the same reply

I have the same problem too. My dad
had a urinary retention problem when he landed here in USA. I made a claim
to Mercury in UK, got a response asking for a declartion from the family
doctor back in India. I provided that but no response after that. The
case is like a rock in dead waters.

I am surprised to see so many complaints about
Mercury International. So there are quite a few on the same
board. My mother had a knee injury when she was visiting me in the US
and her Insurance was also through National Insurance.
I had submitted claims of about 2500$ sometime in Aug 2002 but haven't
heard anything from them as yet. This time, while in Calcutta, I spoke
with the Manager at National Insurance and they assured me that the case
that they had with Mercury had been settled and that Mercury had started
processing claims.
They also sent Mercury International a letter on my behalf to expedite
the process. But I haven't heard anything from Mercury as yet. This is
all so very very frustrating. Is there anything that we can do to take
this company to court? Atrayee Bhattacharyya- 28 January 2003

My mother who was on a visit to US with
a mediclaim policy from National Insurance com., undergone
a cardiac procedure after a heart attack. Before the procedure we contacted
Mercury Intl, Florida office and confirmed that we could consult a doctor.
They promised me several times that they are in contact with the hospital
for the direct payment of over $ 25,000 .
Few months later we realised that they just tricked us but did not do
any thing to settle the claim. After several months of emails/telephone/fax
suddenly we received a rejection letter from mercury with out explaining
why the claim was denied. A signature was scribbled on the two line letter
but no name of the person signed it. My repeated letters and faxes to
both Uk and Indian offices has not received any reply so far. I am planning
to start a legal step. Any one who has similar problems with the above
companies may please contact me

Hi All, My parents are visiting us next
month and are planning to take insurance from United Insurance in India.
I heard that United Insurance goes through Mercury International too.
Please do let me know, if I should take insurance from somebody else rather
than United Insurance. Is mercury international still the same, not paying
for the medical bills? Any feedback is appreciated Rama Mohan

My parents had arrived last month at Los Angeles
Airport. To their surprise they lost on baggage. They
complained at airport authorities and got thier bag next Day. But the
bag was opened and i had my valueable things lost and the bag was totally
damaged with the wheels broken. I file my complaint to Mercury International
for claim. And no response has been recieved as of yet.
I don't recommend any body to get insurance from this Company.

My mother visited me in Minneapolis, MN in April-July 2002. She
purchased Videsh Yatra Mitra Policy from United India. Mercury
International is the third party company that is processing claims for
United India. My mother got very sick unexpectedly due
to pancreatitis. She went into emergency and subsequently went under a
surgery to remove her galbladder. I have contacted mercury international
prior to her surgery and obtained their written approval to go ahead with
the surgery. Since then, my mother returned to India but none of the bills
have been addressed.
Both my father (lives with Mom in India) and I (in Minneapolis) have been
in constant contact with both Mercury and United India. For a while both
mentioned the disagreements they were having for not paying the claims.
For the last 4+ months, the story has changed. Mercury does say that they
approve all the bills (totaling $35,000) but so far did not pay a single
dime to the hospitals.
They are very unprofessional when I call them, ranging from hanging up
on me to giving me false information. My mother is now receiving letters
from collection agencies that are trying to collect the money from her.
I consider what Mercury International is doing outright fraud.
I can provide all documentation of the letter of approval from Mercury,
letters received by my father from both United India and Mercury , copies
of bills sent to Mercury numerous times as well as the letters written
by me and my father to both companies. Aruna A. Raghavan ... 10

It looks like Mercury International is really
screwing everyone. No wonder Indian insurance companies
severed ties with them. My mom's $2500 bills are pending since Oct 2001.
I sent them a registered mail in Oct 2001. Thye said they never received
it. I called them up and they asked me to fax the documents which they
confirmed they received. Then when I called up after 2 months, they say
we are not in the system and asked me to refax. This process of fax and
refax was done about 7-8 times over 15 months. Finally when I called them
up in May/June 2003 they said that they do not accept faxes and I need
to send a hard copy.
I finally send a registered mail on June 30th 2003 which they have confirmed
received. But it is 2 months now and they say I am still not in the system
and it is taking 4 months for processing. This is crazy. I think someone
should file a combined case against this organization. On top of that
when I called them up 2 days back and explained the case to customer rep
all over again he hung up. WHen I called back he transferred me to a voice
mail which says - India claims is taking a long time ...... Sudhir

My Mother had visited me and had purchased
Medical Insurance through New India Assurance in Tamilnadu.
She had to undergo some minor checkup. Dr. charges amount to approx. $1400.
This was in Feb~May 2002. I had filed my claims to Mercury in May'2002.
As of now they have not responded at all regarding the status of the claim.
I had wasted dozens of ph. calls and emails. One time they had asked to
submit Drs. report from India, which we did too.
They say that the New India has not paid their dues and this was why the
hold up..Last time I had called they were very rude on the phone and said
that we were holding them up in processing claims when we ask for status
on the phone.. It is basically one of their expected services to respond
to claims whether it be on phone or email, how can they talk like that..
Please do something to get these claims processed immediatedly.
