Van Shoes

Mrs G Dixon

My son bought a pair of van shoes from Allsport, Stevenage on 16.08.2002. I noticed they were falling apart on 17.9.2002 I took them back to the shop as they were expensive trainers and they had been given just casual wear ie going out they were bought for leisure not skate boarding.

They said they were scuffed and would do nothing but I could have them inspected by their area manager.

I was not happy with this and rang VAns who said that if I took them back to the shop they would send them to vans for inspection. They refused to do this. When they were returned to Vans they said they had grass stains on the laces and the my son had worn then for BMX.

He had not. He does not have a bmx bike or is it his hobby. The shoes did probably have grass stains on the laces, but we live in a village without pavement it's difficult not to get some grass stains on your shoes. These shoes are poorly made the rubber rim is poorly glued to the suede upper and has come unglued and bits of rubber have ripped off.

My son has worn the shoes he has played tennis in them and probably kicked a ball about in them. They did not stay in the box for 5 weeks but if as the young man at Vans suggests they are supposed to last 6 months skateboarding they would not last five minutes of that kind of wear. They are ripping off young people with designer shoes as that is the only reason my son bought them.

Van Shoes has now responded:

"For now Vans still stands by this decision"

Van Shoes is sticking to it's decision (click here to read the company's response). But welcome an independent assessment. A good sign perhaps?

We wait to hear from Mrs Dixon.

It will cost £30 for me to have the shoes assessed. Then £27 insmall claims to get my costs back. I spent £5 sending them to Vans. It is a pity they do not admit this model Prone is a poor manufacture as the pair my son had before lasted a year.

Instead of an advocate I will never buy their products again.Their tactic to put lots of obstacles in your way till you give up has worked as it is not enough money to make the effort for me. Unfortunately £60 is alot for some. Mrs G Dixon... 10 November 2002

My boyfriend has owned a pair of Vans shoes since he started skating over 5 years ago...he still skates in them from time to time...its a poor sweeping generalization to tag every shoe Vans has made as a poor investment...I myself have a pair of Vans from 3 years ago...plan on buying another pair in about five minutes...
