I have written to Ebay on numerous occasions (by email) informing
them of the serious problem of Fake Autographed items being sold
to the public (sometimes for rather large amounts of money) via
their auction site www.ebay.co.uk
At the time of writing my last letter to Ebay there were 8 sellers
(only the tip of the ice-berg) offering a total of 1249 items
- all of which were non-authentic. One of the sellers (who uses
a number of ID's on Ebay) has even been expelled from the UACC.
Unfortunately, unsuspecting buyers are spending a fortune on what
they think is the genuine article - but a worryingly huge amount
of what is listed on Ebay is far from it.
Ebay do not seem to want to do anything about this situation
- they seem to be more interested in listing fees and commission
from these sellers than protecting their members from these crooks.
I have had only useless "standard" reply emails from
Ebay Customer Support - They deliberately hide all other contact/telephone
information from the public.
I feel it is about time that Ebay were held accountable for this
outrageous situation and I am happy to supply any further information
that I can with regard to this matter.
At the time of writing this letter, all 8 of these sellers are
still being allowed to peddle their wares on Ebay.
=================================
There is another side to this story.
I have been banned on ebay with no cause, no justification
and no warning. They have implied to purchasers that I am dishonest
- by telling them not to send me cheques for contracted purchases.
They have not responded to my request for information, except with
a standard email stating I've contravened their regulations. My
reputation has been damaged and I have no legal redress because
they are located in another country.
They hide behind nebulous and vague excuses. They have damned me
as guilty without checking. All my items are accurately described
and are accompanied by photographs.EBay should be held to account
for contractual obligations after items are sold. At the very least,
the problem should be explained in full and an explanation sought,
before they do anything.

I agree entirely with the comments
of Crystal Dowell and would add that, if people
are stupid enough to think that they can get authentic collectors'
items or designer goods at knock-down prices in an internet second-hand
site, then they deserve all they get. Andrew MacLeish ...

Hi, I recently bought an item on Ebay under
their 'buy it now' section. The sellers feedback
was good - and I sent money for goods by bank transfer as requested.
NO GOODS. I contacted Ebay - all they seem to have is standard letters,
no telephone numbers or the ability to actually speak to anyone.
I spsent a long time trying to find out the name and address of
the seller. To cut a long story short I found that the original
seller account had been hacked into - everything changed and my
money had gone to 'god knows where'. I complained to Ebay - more
standard letters - I then find that this account had been hacked
into more than once.
I have had quite a few emails from other Ebayers who have been defrauded
- I think they have quite a problem with security. The most they
offer in compensation is about £120. which means that I have
lost over £1,000. From what I gather this is extremely common.
I would caution anyone buying on the site to be very careful paying
by anything other than a credit card - at least you can get the
money back. Prudence Wild .. 19 September 2003

I too have had the exact same problem
paid for goods 60 cheque cashed no goods, contacted ebay
no compensation because all items were not valued individualy over
15 no money back no goods just 60 down, no telephone number to contact
and only standard email received over and over again, would advise
anyone buying on this site not to.
