I purchased a washing machine from my local Comet store on 22/04/00
on a salespersons advice and guidance and being a mother of two
young children the usual requests were made i.e wanted machine
to last, plenty of wash options etc.
The reason for my purchase was that my old machine was 6 yrs old
and i had recently received a lump sum payment so as you do I
thought best buy now.
What a mistake. On the 28/09/2001 the machine made terrible loud
noises and was jumping about a lot. The concrete slab inside was
broken into pieces.
My partner visited Comet the next day to be told that it "didn't
sound right" and gave us a service number. They in turn gave
another number stating nothing they could do due to it being outside
12 mth guarantee period.
Similar info was given again with the addition of I would have
to pay in region of £40 callout plus parts etc. We had already
been told by an independant engineer on a visit to a local domestic
appliance shop that the part was no longer used in washing machines
as lots of problems had been caused he himself had seen many.
Not being satisfied with this and on the advice of trading standards
i wrote to Comet requesting an inspection by their engineer with
a view to repair at no charge to myself as the washer had proved
not of satisfactory quality that is durable as it did not meet
expected durability.
This was totally refused so I passed the matter to trading standards.
They telephoned me last Week having been in contact with Comet
three times and meeting with the same negativeness and unwillingness
to listen or help. I have not had use of the washer since 28/09/01
and being a student with a young family and a partner on a low
income this has caused much distress.
I am not asking for a replacement or anything all I request is
a free repair as when I make a large purchase such as this I do
not expect the following year to have to pay nearly another £100.
My last washer lasted 6 years with no problems.
If Comet continue treating people like this then I expect consumers
will not be so eager to purchase from them!!
